How to Engage with Leadership Coaching
In the first of my latest series of blogs I introduced the concept of Leadership Coaching as an essential strategy for ensuring business success and resilience.
As a quick reminder, leadership coaching can be defined as ‘the conscious process of developing an individual’s competencies and talents to make them a more effective team leader.’
Like any successful business strategy, you need to consider how to get the best out of it and reap the benefits in the most positive way.
And so, here are my top tips to ensure your leadership coaching experience is as effective as possible.
Define your goals
Identify and articulate your specific goals;
Reflect on what you want to achieve – whether it’s improving communication skills, enhancing team dynamics, getting promoted, or developing a leadership style aligned with your values.
Your Goals need to enable you to achieve your Purpose – one of the dimensions of being Resilient.
Self-reflection
Introspect and examine your strengths, weaknesses, values, and beliefs;
Reflect on past experiences, challenges, and successes to gain insights into your leadership style;
During coaching sessions, be open and honest about your self-reflections - this will allow your coach to provide targeted guidance and help you navigate obstacles more effectively.
This is probably the most relevant and important way you can engage with your Coaching. This is also why I define Resilience as “Springing Forward with Learning”

Participation
Active participation is vital;
Be fully present during coaching sessions and engage in meaningful conversations;
Propose important topics of discussion, seek clarification, and share your thoughts and concerns openly;
Remember, the more engaged you are, the more you will benefit from the coaching process.
Accountability
Hold yourself accountable for implementing the strategies and action plans discussed during coaching sessions;
Set realistic goals, create a timeline, and monitor your progress regularly;
Your coach is your accountability partner, providing support and guidance along the way.
Patience & perseverance
Maintain an optimistic mindset, as a method of achieving genuine feelings of hope.
Stay committed to the process, and embrace the learning opportunities that come your way;
Trust the coaching process and be patient as you navigate through new strategies and behaviours.
Feedback
Feedback is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth;
Be open to constructive criticism;
Actively seek ongoing feedback from your colleagues, team members, and stakeholders;
Create a safe environment where feedback is encouraged;
Express appreciation and act on the feedback received to continuously improve and evolve as a leader.
Apply learning beyond coaching sessions
Take what you’ve learned during coaching sessions and apply it to your daily life as a leader;
Practice new communication techniques, apply leadership strategies, and implement the action plans you’ve developed;
Actively seek opportunities to grow, such as attending relevant workshops, reading leadership literature, or joining professional networks;
The more you integrate coaching insights into your day-to-day activities, the greater the impact on your leadership effectiveness.
Like any business strategy, the key is monitoring its success.
Here are my top tips to measure the success of your engagement with leadership coaching.
Goals (and Purpose)
Evaluate the extent to which you’ve accomplished the specific goals set at the beginning of the coaching;
Compare initial goals with current leadership capabilities and performance to assess progress and outcomes.
Behaviour
Look for observable changes in your leadership behaviours and actions;
Assess whether you’ve implemented new strategies, adopted more effective communication styles, or demonstrated improved leadership skills as a result of coaching.
Self-reflection
Engage in self-reflection to evaluate your progress;
Consider whether you’ve gained new insights, increased self-awareness, and developed a deeper understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement.
Assess how well you’ve applied coaching insights to your daily leadership practices.
Performance metrics
Examine relevant performance metrics or key performance indicators (KPIs) that align with your leadership role;
Measure any improvements in areas such as employee engagement, team productivity, goal attainment, or organisational outcomes to gauge the impact of your coaching on overall performance.
Measuring the success of your leadership coaching engagement is an individual process. It’s important to assess your progress, seek feedback, and reflect on your growth and development to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact and effectiveness of the coaching experience.
In conclusion, making the most of your leadership coaching engagement is crucial for your personal and professional growth.
It empowers you to enhance your leadership skills, overcome challenges, and achieve your goals.
